Take Care of Your Sublimation Ink

Ink is a crucial part of the sublimation process, so it is important to handle and store it carefully.

Temperature and humidity both affect sublimation ink and paper. Many printer manufacturers recommend operating temperatures between approximately 59°F and 77°F, with humidity kept within the range specified for your printer.

Air that is too dry can contribute to ink drying and print-head problems, while excessive humidity may allow moisture to affect transfer paper and blank substrates. Maintaining a stable environment helps protect both the printer and the quality of your finished products.

Monitor the Waste Ink Tank

Your printer’s waste ink tank also requires attention. Each time the printer performs a print-head cleaning—including automatic cleanings—waste ink is collected in a tank or maintenance container.

Some sublimation printers use a removable maintenance tank that is replaced when full. Others drain waste ink into a separate external container. Refer to your printer’s manual for the correct disposal and replacement procedure.

A full waste tank will often stop the printer from operating, so it is wise to keep a replacement tank or maintenance box available when your printer uses a replaceable unit.

Keep Your Sublimation Printer Powered On

To maintain printer performance, it is important to keep the print heads clear. Printing regularly helps prevent clogs, but extended periods of inactivity can allow ink to dry inside the print head.

Many sublimation printers have built-in maintenance routines that periodically check and clean the print heads. These automatic maintenance cycles may only occur while the printer remains powered on.

Leaving the printer powered on, when recommended by the manufacturer, allows it to perform those maintenance checks and helps reduce the risk of dried ink and blocked nozzles.

Maintain a Clean Work Area

A clean workspace supports accurate, dependable printing, so keep the area around your printer free of dust, lint, and debris.

A cluttered or dusty workspace makes production more difficult and can affect print quality. Dust may settle on paper, enter the printer, or contribute to clogged print heads.

If your printer uses refillable cartridges or ink tanks, refill them in a controlled, clean area. Small particles introduced during filling can contaminate the ink system.

Follow the correct ink replacement and filling procedure to reduce the chance of introducing air bubbles, contamination, or other issues that can negatively affect your prints.
