Understanding Heat Transfer Paper

Heat transfer paper is used to apply printed designs to garments with heat. The process begins by printing a design onto transfer paper with an inkjet or laser printer. You then position the paper on the garment and apply heat. A household iron may suffice for hobby use, but a heat press produces more consistent results.

Once pressed, the paper is peeled away and the design remains on the fabric. The method is user-friendly and generally requires a modest initial investment, making it popular with beginners.

Delving Into Sublimation Printing

Sublimation printing also uses a special paper, but the key difference is the chemistry. Under heat, sublimation ink transitions from a solid to a gas and embeds directly into polyester fibers. As it cools, it returns to a solid and becomes part of the material.

This creates a durable print that cannot be distinguished from the fabric by touch, making it ideal for garments that undergo frequent washing.

Sublimation is not limited to fabric. It can also decorate many poly-coated hard surfaces, including mugs, coasters, and puzzles.
